The Malawi Police Service has raised concern over a significant surge in sexual violence cases, particularly defilement and rape, recorded in the first quarter of 2025.

Deputy National Police Spokesperson Harry Namwaza revealed that defilement cases have risen from 344 during the same period in 2024 to 476 this year which is too alarming. Additionally, 41 rape cases have been reported so far in 2025, up from 35 in the previous year.

Namwaza attributed this rise partly to harmful traditional beliefs and superstitions, noting that some men are being misled by herbalists who claim that sleeping with minors can bring wealth.

“This is a national concern that requires a united front to protect our children and vulnerable citizens,” said Namwaza.

He stressed the need for collective action, calling on communities, stakeholders, and law enforcement agencies to work together in curbing these acts.
