A six-year-old boy in Nkhotakota has drowned in the Katete River, where he had gone swimming with friends.

According to Nkhunga Police public relations officer Andrew Kamanga, the incident was reported by 58-year-old Christina Chinthomba from Kada Village, under Traditional Authority Kanyenda. She stated that her nephew left home with friends to swim in the river yesterday and never returned.

“The reporter was surprised that the child had not returned home by late evening. A follow-up at the river led to the discovery of the body floating, prompting her to report the matter to Nkhunga Police,” Kamanga said.

Police officers and medical personnel from Nkhunga Health Centre visited the scene and confirmed that the cause of death was suffocation, secondary to drowning.

Police have since renewed their appeal to communities living near water bodies to ensure minors do not swim without supervision.
