The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi has urged political parties to respect press freedom and allow journalists to operate without intimidation while covering campaign rallies ahead of the upcoming general elections.

The call follows an incident in which some journalists faced hostility from Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters after posting images showing a low turnout at a rally held at Ntchisi Community Ground.

MISA Malawi Chairperson Golden Matonga strongly condemned the behaviour, stating that journalists must retain the editorial independence to choose what images or footage to share on social media platforms or broadcast through media outlets, free from political interference.

As of now, DPP spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba has not issued a statement regarding the incident.
