Thyolo Second Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced 24-year-old Edward Galaitoni to serve a 9-year jail term for wounding a guard in an attempt to steal macadamia nuts.

According to Lead State Prosecutor, Ishmael Abubasti, Galaitoni, with accomplices, on the night of 15 to 16 January this year, invaded Mtimabi Division under Makandi Estate with panga knives and metal bars and wounded Hilton Mussa to unconsciousness as he was guarding the area.

In his sentencing, Second Grade Magistrate James Balakasi said the punishment should act as a deterrent to others who think this is a way of survival, adding that he has considered the status of the victim, who is unable to walk and work for a living now.
