
Malawi Police Call for Unity as Political Violence Increases

As Malawi prepares for the 16 September tripartite elections, political violence is increasing in many areas across the country. As a result southern Region Police have implemented a significant initiative to deal with those political violence.
Police in Malawi’s Southern Region organized a big walk in Blantyre today on 3rd June2025, with the aim to promote unity, peace and discourage political violence among citizens .
The big walk comes after recent cases of violence in places like Mponera and Machinga where political supporters fought and even used weapons. In Machinga, stones were thrown at a car carrying Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members on their way from a political rally.
There are also been accusations between parties, with each side blaming the other for causing trouble.
To respond, the police visited several areas, including the Southern Region Police Headquarters at Chichiri, where they enganged with public and shared message of peace and unity ahead of the September 2025 elections.
Speaking during the event, Southern Religion Police Spokesperson, Beatrice Mikuwa stressed out the need for unity and cooperation in fighting against acts of political violence.
