Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has expressed their concern after the the arrest of their Vice President for the North, Jappie Mhango by the Ant corruption Bureau (ACB) over abuse of power.
in a press statement signed by DPP Spokesperson Shadric Namalomba , Mhango was arrested for being involved in illegal contracts and misuse of government funds when he was Minister of Transport and public works in 2016 and 2017.
DPP said the timing of the arrest is suspicious and they believe that it is a political motive because Malawi is close to September elections. DPP is also wondering why the ACB waited over seven years to act and why they are only going after opposition members while ignoring people in the current government.
‘The government is using the ACB and Police to silence people who speak against it and this is one way of hiding the government’s own corruption,’ reads the statement.
Meanwhile DPP said it will continue to fight for democracy and urges all Malawians to be strong and united. They believe that with courage and team work, Malawi can remain a true democracy.
