Man Gets 9 Year Jail Term For Chewing 14 Year-old Gil In Mponela

Mponela first Grade Magistrate court in Dowa has sentenced a 72-year-old man to nine years imprisonment with hard labor for defiling a 14-year-old girl.
The court heard that the convict lured the minor to his house where he sexually assaulted her. Police prosecutor Sub Inspector Ophia Ng’ambi presented five witnesses who testified against the accused.
Initially, the elderly man denied the charges when he first appeared in court on October 6, 2023. However, after evaluating all evidence, Magistrate Mndala found him guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
In delivering the sentence, Magistrate Talakwanji Mndala emphasized the gravity of the offense: “Defilement cases are serious crimes that destroy young lives. This sentence should serve as a warning to others.”
Mponela Police Station spokesperson MacPatson Msadala welcomed the judgment, stating it demonstrates the justice system’s commitment to protecting children. “We commend the court for this decision which reinforces our fight against gender-based violence,” Msadala said.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about child sexual abuse in Malawi’s rural communities. Local child protection activists have called for stronger community vigilance to prevent such crimes.
The convict will serve his sentence at Maula Prison in Lilongwe. Meanwhile, authorities have encouraged communities to report any suspected cases of child abuse to police or social welfare offices.
