The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has officially responded to the request for an independent audit of the country’s elections management system from opposition parties.

In the press statement which was signed by the Chief Election Officer for MEC, Andrew Mpesi, comfirmed that the commission received the concept note and scope for the audit on 23rd May 2025.

Mpesi stated that MEC is currently reviewing the document and it will announce its position soon.

This follows the concerns that the opposition parties including Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), United Democratic Front(UDF), United Transformation Movement (UTM), Peoples Party (PP) and Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) have stressed out that MEC is taking time to respond.

Speaking on behalf of all parties, Secretary General for People’s Party, Ben Chakhame said the Commission is not showing enough interest in resolving key election issues.

Chakhame also accused MEC of delaying the process and acting with arrogance and added that time is running out, the parties expect serious action from MEC soon.
