Court in Ntcheu district has convicted and sentenced a 31-year-old man to 7 years in prison for raping a 17-year-old girl.
Ntcheu Police Spokesperson, Jacob Khembo, identified the convict as Austin Kayitane who raped the girl on the afternoon of 20 December last year when she was going home from her grandmothers house.
According to Khembo the case was heard through the government prosecutor sergeant Boniface Mweteya.
Mweteteya said the case was reported to them through the mother of the victim after the girl explained to her mother that she was raped and the police arrested Kayitane.
When Kayitane appeared in court he denied the charges against him as a result the court called four witnesses, who gave evidence that proved that he was guilty.
The state lawyer asked the court to give Kayitane strong punishment which will save as a warning as such cases are still increasing in the country and the court agreed and sentenced him to prison for violating the child’s rights.
Austin Kayitane hails from Likumbu village under Traditional Authority Njolomole in Ntcheu district.
