At least 30 people were killed when an Air India plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed in a residential area near Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating flight AI-171 to London’s Gatwick Airport, sent out a Mayday call shortly after takeoff before plummeting to the ground.

The plane, with 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals, and 1 Canadian on board, crashed into a medical college hostel, sparking a massive fire and prompting an emergency response.

Rescue teams reported finding bodies and injured individuals at the scene.
