A 22-year-old man from Lusaka’s Zingalume area has been convicted of attempted incest after being found guilty of trying to sleep with his 42-year-old biological mother.
The man, identified as Fanizani Phiri, was convicted by Lusaka Magistrate Mutinta Mwenya, who stated that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Magistrate Mwenya noted that despite the victim’s initial hesitation to pursue the case and her request for police to merely reprimand her son, the court was satisfied that the offence of attempted incest had indeed been committed.
The court further confirmed that the woman in question is Phiri’s biological mother, dismissing his denial of their relationship during testimony.
Magistrate Mwenya has since committed Phiri to the High Court for sentencing, a move typically made when a case carries a potentially severe punishment.
The case has sparked public concern and debate about family boundaries and psychological welfare, especially in communities where such cases are rarely brought to court.
Phiri now awaits sentencing in the High Court, where a harsher penalty may be imposed.
