Striking lawyers from the Ministry of Justice resumed work today but have issued a 14-day ultimatum for the government to address their grievances, warning that failure to do so will lead to another industrial action.

One of the lawyers stated that if their demands are not met within the two-week period, they will be left with no choice but to resume their strike.

Ministry of Justice spokesperson Frank Namangale acknowledged that the strike had severely disrupted court operations nationwide.

“The sit-in caused adjournments in civil, criminal, and commercial cases across multiple courts,” said Namangale.

The lawyers are demanding improvements to their conditions of service. These include an increase in the non-practicing allowance from K500,000 to K1 million per month, a raise in the security allowance from K100,000 to K300,000, and an increase in the telephone allowance from K50,000 to K100,000.

Additionally, they are calling on the government to introduce a housing allowance and grant a duty waiver on imported motor vehicles.
