A British man has miraculously survived a devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, India, that is believed to have killed more than 200 people.
According to Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik, the lone confirmed survivor, identified as 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, was seated in 11A on the ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The flight, bound for London Gatwick Airport, crashed just seconds after take-off, slamming into residential accommodation used by doctors in the city.
Ramesh, who was visiting family in India and returning home to London where he lives with his wife and child, described the horrific experience from his hospital bed. “Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,” he told local media.
“When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital,” he recounted.
Dramatic footage captured at the scene showed Ramesh, visibly injured, walking away from the wreckage. He reportedly sustained injuries to his chest, eyes, and feet.
Authorities initially believed there were no survivors among the 242 passengers on board. However, Ramesh’s survival was confirmed after he shared his boarding pass and was found in a nearby residential area. He was quickly transported to a hospital for treatment.
Air India stated that the aircraft was carrying 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. Eleven children, including two newborns, were also on board.
Rescue teams, supported by the military, have recovered at least 204 bodies so far, with casualties reported both from the plane and the ground structures it hit. Indian authorities also reported that another survivor may have been found in the hospital struck by the aircraft.
Aviation experts suspect the Boeing 787 may have experienced a sudden loss of power during the critical phase of take-off, leading to the crash.
Investigations are ongoing as the nation mourns one of its deadliest aviation disasters in recent history.
