The Ministry of Trade and Industry has foiled an attempted smuggling of 300 bales of sugar into Zambia by a Zambian national, Trade Minister Vitumbiko Mumba has confirmed.

The suspect was apprehended around 2 a.m. today following a tip-off from concerned citizens. He was found in possession of the sugar bales, believed to be destined for resale in Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique—markets where the price per bale is reportedly K95,000 higher than Malawi’s current local price of K57,500.

Writing on his official page, Minister Mumba stated that the suspect is now in police custody as authorities continue to crack down on sugar smuggling and hoarding.

The minister further disclosed that sugar production in Malawi is now in full swing after weeks of delays caused by unfavorable weather conditions. However, he emphasized that illegal smuggling and hoarding remain significant challenges threatening the stability of the sugar market.

Authorities have pledged continued vigilance to protect both the economy and consumers from such illicit activities.
