Police in Zambia have arrested a 45-year-old Chinese businessman, Liang Qi, on allegations of obtaining money by false pretences after he allegedly scammed a fellow Chinese national out of USD 55,000 in a fake gold deal.

Zambia Police Service Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the arrest, stating that Liang was detained at Kanyama Police Station on Sunday, June 15, 2025, around 5:00 AM.

The complaint was filed by Sun Jun, 46, of Emmasdale, Lusaka, who reported that on May 23, 2025, he was deceived into paying $55,000 for what he was led to believe was genuine gold. It was later discovered that the minerals he received were counterfeit.

Following the complaint, police launched an investigation which led to the successful arrest of the suspect. However, no recovery of the stolen funds has been made at this stage.

Liang Qi remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon as investigations continue.

Hamoonga assured the public that updates on the case will be provided as more information becomes available.
