Malawi is today commemorating Albinism Awareness Day at Michongwe Primary School in Ntaja, Machinga District. The event is being led by the Minister of Defence, Monica Chang’anamuno, and aligns with the United Nations’ call to ensure the full inclusion of people with disabilities, particularly persons with albinism, in all democratic processes, including the country’s upcoming elections scheduled for September.

This year’s commemoration is being held under the theme: “United for Peace and Inclusion: Strengthening the Protection of People with Albinism During Elections.” The theme reflects the UN’s emphasis on the importance of protecting the rights of persons with albinism and promoting their full participation in all aspects of society.

The ceremony began with a peaceful march, where participants carried banners and posters highlighting the challenges that persons with albinism face daily, including fear of exclusion and discrimination. The parade served as a powerful reminder of the need for unity and equal treatment, particularly during politically sensitive times like elections.

The event aims to raise public awareness and encourage communities across Malawi to support and include persons with albinism in all areas of life. It also seeks to promote peaceful, inclusive, and discrimination-free elections where every citizen, regardless of ability or appearance, can participate equally and safely.
