One Dead, 5 Injured in Nyambadwe Road Accident

One person has died while five others sustained injuries in a road accident that occurred yesteday on 16 June at Sanders Road junction in Nyambadwe, Blantyre.

Sub Inspector Chibisa Mulimbika, Public Relations Officer for Ndirande Police Station, the accident happened around 16:30 hours and involved a PE 1244 Iveco Trakker tanker and a NS 5824 Hino Dutro light lorry.

Mulimbika said the crash occurred after the Iveco Trakker tanker, being driven by Gift Malata, 42, experienced brake failure while heading from Magalasi Roundabout towards H.H.I along Old Chileka Road. The driver lost control and swerved into the opposite lane, colliding with the oncoming lorry driven by Collins Galeta, 25, which was carrying six passengers.

“All victims were taken to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, where 37-year-old Nelia Njobvu was pronounced dead on arrival,” said Mulimbika. The remaining five victims were treated as outpatients.

The accident resulted in significant damage to both vehicles the tanker sustained front-end and windshield damage, while the light lorry was extensively damaged at the front.

The deceased, Nelia Njobvu, hailed from Chekimu Village, under Traditional Authority Nsomba in Blantyre District.

Police are continuing investigations into the incident.
