Baltasar Ebang Engonga, a former senior government official in Equatorial Guinea and brother to the country’s long-serving President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, is facing the possibility of an 18-year prison sentence over serious corruption and abuse allegations.

Engonga, aged 47, first came into the spotlight in 2024 after being implicated in a scandal involving sex tapes with multiple young women, some of whom he was accused of secretly filming.

He has been held at the infamous Black Beach Prison since 2024 following accusations of embezzling public funds while serving in a senior government position.

Reports by international media indicate that the prosecution is pushing for an 18-year jail term for Engonga, who is among several individuals both men and women facing charges in the high-profile case.

The trial officially began on June 30, 2025, with observers noting it as a critical test of the country’s willingness to tackle high-level corruption.
