The Lusaka High Court in Zambia has convicted 49-year-old Mildred Kasase and her son Alex Zulu of manslaughter in connection with the death of a relative, Alex Kanyama Zulu.

The two were initially facing a charge of murder. However, Lusaka High Court Judge Irene Mbewe downgraded the charge to manslaughter, ruling that although the duo unlawfully caused the victim’s death, the prosecution had failed to prove that their actions were carried out with “malice aforethought” a key component in securing a murder conviction.

The incident occurred on July 29, 2023, and involved the unlawful killing of Zulu, whose relation to the convicted pair was not disclosed in court.

Sentencing is expected to take place soon, and both convicts remain in custody as they await the court’s decision on the penalty.
