Police in Ndirande have arrested a 43-year-old man, identified as Steven Chisale, on suspicion of stealing K4.2 million from his church.
According to Deputy Ndirande Police Public Relations Officer Madalitso Sadik Phiri, Chisale had been entrusted with managing church finances while the official church treasurer was on maternity leave.
Phiri explained that during this period, Chisale allegedly failed to deposit tithe collections into the church’s bank account. When questioned by church authorities, he reportedly admitted to misappropriating the funds but made no effort to return the money.
Following his admission and failure to repay the amount, Chisale was arrested and is expected to face theft and embezzlement charges.
Police have since urged institutions to maintain financial oversight, even during staff transitions, to prevent such incidents.
