
Man Arrested in Rumphi for Possession of 18.5kg Raw Ivory

Police in Rumphi District have arrested a 45-year-old man, James Katumbi, after he was allegedly found in possession of raw ivory weighing 18.5 kilograms.
The arrest took place on July 5, 2025, at Mlongoti Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe. According to Rumphi Police, detectives received a tip-off that Katumbi was keeping ivory at his residence. Officers followed up on the information, leading to his arrest and the recovery of the illicit wildlife product.
Katumbi, who comes from Mlongoti Village, is expected to appear in court once investigations are complete. He is likely to be charged under laws governing the possession of listed or protected species.
Possession of ivory is a serious offence under Malawi’s wildlife conservation laws.
