Shock and grief have engulfed the community of Kabwinja in Dowa following the tragic death of Emmanuel Lupia, a primary school teacher who lost his life during a school football match.
On Saturday, July 5, 2025, Kabwinja Primary School was playing a football game against Chikwawe Primary School at Nambamba ground, a day meant to celebrate sportsmanship and community spirit.
But the joyful event turned tragic when a vehicle, reportedly driven by a man known only as Mike Sonyezani, belonging to Nkhondo Estate recklessly drove through the playing field while the match was in progress.
Eyewitnesses say Mr. Lupia, who also served as the sports teacher, approached the driver to question his actions. As he walked away, the driver allegedly accelerated toward him.
“As he tried to run from the speeding vehicle, he fell, and the car ran over him. He bled heavily and died on the spot,” said one emotional witness.
The late teacher, remembered for his dedication and love for sports, was laid to rest in Salima.
The incident has sparked outrage among community members, with calls for swift justice. Police have launched an investigation into the matter and the driver is in custody.
