The African music industry is in mourning following the tragic death of 26-year-old rising star Ifunanya Nwangene, who passed away after being bitten by a cobra inside her home in Abuja.

Nwangene, who gained widespread fame for her standout performances on The Voice Nigeria, was widely regarded as one of the continent’s most promising young talents. According to friends and family, the singer was asleep in her Abuja residence when she was jolted awake by a sharp pain. It was soon discovered that she had been bitten by a cobra.

A subsequent search of her home revealed a terrifying discovery: two snakes were found hidden within the premises.

The tragedy has sparked outrage regarding the state of emergency medical care in Nigeria. Reports, including those from the BBC, indicate that Nwangene’s death was exacerbated by a critical lack of medical supplies:

Upon arrival at a nearby facility, staff informed the family that they had no antivenom in stock. She was rushed to a larger hospital, but medical personnel there reportedly only had one of the two necessary doses required to treat a cobra bite.

As the venom took hold, Nwangene reportedly lost the ability to breathe and speak. Despite desperate efforts to relocate her to a better-equipped facility, she passed away before receiving the full treatment.

Tributes have poured in from across Africa for the young singer. Ifunanya was celebrated not only for her vocal range but for her vibrant stage presence that captured the hearts of millions during her time on The Voice.

“She had the world at her feet,” one fellow artist posted online. “To lose such a talent to a preventable medical shortage is a double tragedy.”

The incident has highlighted a growing concern over the availability of life-saving antivenoms in urban Nigerian hospitals, especially during the rainy season when snake activity often increases.
