The High Court in Lilongwe has ordered the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to pay Madalitso Mazombwe a total of K1.5 million within two days, following a legal dispute over internal party elections.
The case stems from MCP’s decision to nullify and demand a rerun of its primary elections held in the southern part of Salima District, despite Mazombwe having emerged the winner in the initial polls.
MCP argued that the election was marred by irregularities, prompting their call for a fresh vote. In response, Mazombwe challenged the decision in court, arguing that the move was unjust and baseless.
After reviewing the case, the court ruled in Mazombwe’s favor and directed the party to compensate him for legal costs and related damages, amounting to K1.5 million, to be paid within 48 hours.
