Minister of Trade and Industry, Vitumbiko Mumba, recently hosted Grivin Black, a student from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), for a private dinner after the student became the target of public ridicule.
Grivin faced heavy online backlash and was turned into a meme after struggling to express himself in English during a public lecture last Friday in Blantyre.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Mumba said he invited Grivin to hear his story and offer words of encouragement.
“The greatness of a nation is judged by how it treats its most vulnerable,” wrote Minister Vitumbiko Mumba.
The incident has since sparked an outpouring of support from well-known personalities across the country.
Renowned MC Chisomo Mwamadi has offered to give Grivin free public speaking lessons.
Bishop Chikumbutso of Amazing Grace Christian Gathering has pledged K100,000 in support.
Social media influencer Ada Dalk has also stepped in to cover Grivin’s transport costs.
Grivin’s story has now become a symbol of hope, reminding Malawians that compassion matters more than criticism.
