AFORD Forms Alliance with DPP, Endorses Mutharika for Presidency

The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) has announced a coalition with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) ahead of the September 16, 2025, general elections.
AFORD president Enock Chihana made the announcement during a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Lilongwe, stating that the decision was made by the party’s executive committee.
Chihana emphasized that he is not seeking any position within the alliance and confirmed that AFORD has officially endorsed DPP leader Peter Mutharika to lead the coalition.
He added that only Mutharika has the authority to choose his running mate.
Chihana further noted that Mutharika must recognize his duty to serve the nation if he wins the upcoming election.
The announcement ceremony was attended by senior DPP officials, including George Chaponda, Peter Mukhito, Ben Phiri, and Sameer Suleiman.
