Joyce Banda First to Submit Presidential Bid as Supporters Gather in Lilongwe

Supporters of the People’s Party (PP), Mafunde, and the Freedom Party (PF) have begun gathering at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe, where PP leader Joyce Banda is expected to submit her letters of interest to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to contest in the upcoming September presidential elections.
Banda becomes the first among more than two dozen aspirants to formally express interest in the presidency.
Security is tight at the venue, with police stationed both inside the perimeter and at the entrance gate, as seen in the photos.
