The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has rejected the nomination of Kamuzu Chibambo, leader of the People’s Transformation Party (PETRA), due to multiple irregularities in his submission.

Among the key issues was the absence of his running mate, Chris Bulakwacha, who failed to appear at the Bingu International Conference centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, with Chibambo stating that Bulakwacha was in South Africa and will return to Malawi today.

MEC Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja highlighted several problems related to the deputy nominee, including the lack of a required message, missing signature, and failure to attach a citizenship certificate.

These shortcomings have rendered the nomination non-compliant with MEC requirements.

Chibambo has been instructed to correct and resubmit his nomination by 30 July if he wishes to remain in the race.
