Man to spend 10 years in jail for having sexual intercourse with 13-year-old girl in Dowa

The First Grade Magistrate’s Court at Mkukula in Dowa has sentenced a 27-year-old man, Sungeni Mischeck Elisa, to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for having sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl in the Ngomani area of Lilongwe.
The court heard the matter through Prosecutor Sub Inspector Patrick Mandanda, who stated that on 17 January 2025, the victim had been left by her mother at Ngomani Market to sell fish.
Mandanda said that at around 7 o’clock in the evening, Elisa called the girl to come to him, but she refused. He then grabbed her and dragged her to his house, where he sexually assaulted her.
Appearing in court, Elisa pleaded guilty to the charge but appealed for leniency, claiming he is the family’s breadwinner.
Passing sentence, Magistrate Mervis Sulumba agreed with Prosecutor Mandanda’s recommendation for a harsh penalty and handed down a 10-year sentence with hard labour.
Elisa hails from Biliati Village under Traditional Authority Champiti in Ntcheu District.
