The National Development Party (NDP) has changed its mind and will now take part in the September 16 presidential election.

The party had earlier decided not to contest, hoping to form a united opposition, but that plan failed.

NDP Secretary General Elias Wakuda Kamanga said the party still plans to work with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on shared goals.

NDP leader Frank Mwenifumbo had signed an alliance with the DPP and withdrew his candidacy last Friday.

However, he has now decided to run for president again.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) confirmed that Mwenifumbo will submit his nomination papers today at 4:30 PM.

NDP officials have not yet explained the reason for this sudden change.
