Authorities in Machinga are investigating a suspected drug theft attempt involving two patient attendants at Chikweo Health Centre.

The two health workers allegedly tried to steal assorted medical drugs from the facility’s pharmacy last week.

They reportedly packed the drugs into a bag but abandoned it after realizing they had been seen.

The incident took place at the facility located in Goliati Village, under Village Head Goliati.

The local leader said there have been several reports of drug theft at the health centre, including a pharmacy break-in two weeks ago.

Investigations into that break-in reportedly led to the detention of the two attendants, who have since spent six days in custody at Nselema Police Unit.

However, Machinga Police Spokesperson Western Kansire said no formal arrests have been made, though the workers have been summoned for questioning.
