President Lazarus Chakwera has apologized to Malawians for the ongoing fuel shortages, attributing the crisis to deliberate acts of sabotage by individuals within the National Oil Company of Malawi (Nocma).

In a national address delivered this evening from Sanjika Palace in Blantyre, Chakwera claimed that some officials at Nocma intentionally delayed fuel imports in an effort to undermine his administration and profit from corrupt deals.

“I ask for forgiveness from all Malawians queuing for fuel,” Chakwera said. “This crisis is not by accident. It is the result of greed and sabotage by those who want this government to fail.”

The President accused corrupt cartels and an unnamed opposition political party of being behind the fuel supply disruptions, saying ordinary motorists are being caught in a political and economic crossfire.

Chakwera vowed to take action against the officials involved, stating that he will fire those responsible at Nocma if he wins the upcoming presidential election scheduled for next Tuesday.
