Police have arrested Bruno Munlo Makina, aged 37, believed to be the ringleader of the violent “zikwanje” gang that has been terrorizing protestors in Lilongwe and other districts.

According to Deputy National Police Spokesperson Superintendent Alfred Chimthere, Makina, from Mponda Village, Traditional Authority Msamala in Balaka, was arrested following ongoing investigations into a spate of violent attacks, robberies, and property destruction.

Chimthere said police have also detained Erick Phakamisa (40) of Undi Village, T/A Kaphuka in Dedza, and Hanif Banda (23) of Wimbe Village, T/A Wimbe in Kasungu, who are suspected to be part of the same criminal network.

In total, 15 suspects linked to the gang have been arrested and are currently in police custody awaiting trial. Fourteen of them appeared before the Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court under heavy police escort, where proceedings into their cases are continuing.

On Friday, October 31, the court granted bail to nine of the suspects, but they were immediately re-arrested on separate charges.

Chimthere added that the suspects face multiple charges, including assault, malicious damage, and theft, and investigations remain ongoing.

Police have since assured the public that they will continue cracking down on violent gangs to restore peace and safety across the country.
