16 Arrested for Petrol Heist, Burglaries, Housebreaking, Fraud & Illegal Weed in Balaka

Seven people have been arrested in Balaka District for allegedly possessing petroleum products, including petrol and diesel, without the required permits.

The suspects, identified as Maxwell Msowoya (35), Ephraim Mambisi (48), Clement Benson (28), Gift Chiwaya (25), Samuel Luka (28), Jones Mac Thayo (71), and Yousuf Ajibu (18), were apprehended during an intelligence-led raid and ambush conducted on Wednesday evening, November 5, 2025.

According to Balaka Police spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha, the operation took place in Ng’onga, Chendausiku, Mponda, and Nkhadze locations within the district. All the suspects are residents of Balaka and are expected to appear in court soon to face charges of illegally possessing petroleum products.

During the same operation, police arrested: Three people for burglary and theft, One person for housebreaking and theft, Four people for possessing cannabis sativa without a licence and one person for fraud

In total, 16 suspects were apprehended during the exercise, demonstrating a strong crackdown on crime in the district.

Police have urged the public to ensure compliance with the law, particularly regarding the handling and storage of fuel products.
