United Transformation Movement (UTM) Parliamentary Leader Patricia Kaliati has called on the Minister of Homeland Security to commission a comprehensive and independent investigation into the Chikangawa plane crash that claimed the life of former Vice President Saulos Chilima.
Addressing Parliament, Kaliati described the tragedy as a national loss, noting that the repeated deaths of high-profile figures in unexplained circumstances must not be ignored. She urged government to act swiftly, saying Malawi cannot afford to continue losing its key leaders and professionals in such preventable incidents.
Kaliati emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, calling for a fresh inquiry to uncover the full truth behind the crash and to ensure that any responsible parties are brought to justice.
The fatal crash occurred on 10 June 2024, when a Malawi Defence Force Dornier 228 aircraft carrying former Vice President Saulos Chilima, former First Lady Patricia Shanil Muluzi, and seven others went down in the Chikangawa Forest Reserve, Nkhata Bay District.
All nine passengers on board lost their lives.
