Peter Alex Banda has been elected Mayor of Lilongwe City after securing 17 votes against William Khumbo Ngulube’s six in an election held this afternoon at the City Council Chamber.

Out of 24 councillors, 23 participated in the vote, with Christopher Namakhwa, who had also shown interest to contest, absent.

Banda, representing Chigoneka-Mtsiriza Ward under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), will lead Malawi’s capital for the next two and a half years.

“I am deeply honoured by the trust my fellow councillors have placed in me,” said Banda, adding, “Together, we will build a clean, beautiful and safe city that future generations will be proud to call home.”

Councillor Triza Silo of Chilinde Ward was elected Deputy Mayor after defeating Councillor Shaibu Luwemba of Kakule Ward by 14 votes to 9.

The election followed Banda’s earlier victory as Mayor. “I am deeply humbled by the confidence my fellow councillors have placed in me,” said Silo, pledging to “work closely with the Mayor and the entire council to make Lilongwe a city for everyone.”

Lilongwe City Council chief executive officer David Kadammanja commended the councillors for the orderly conduct of the elections, saying, “This is how local democracy should function.”
