A 20-year-old man from Moyo Chiefdom in Pemba District has been arrested after being on the run for allegedly causing the death of his 1-year-3-month-old stepdaughter through sexual assault.
The suspect was detained by community members in the Bampu area on 19 November 2025 around 05:00 hours and later handed over to police.
The incident came to light on 15 November when the child’s 20-year-old mother reported to Mbabala Police Post in Choma, expressing suspicion that her husband had murdered her daughter.
According to police findings, the mother had left the child in the care of her stepfather on the morning of 14 November while she attended to business errands. When she returned, she found the child unresponsive inside the house, and the suspect had disappeared from the scene.
Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Moono Namalongo, confirmed that a postmortem conducted on 17 November established that the child died as a result of sexual assault.
Namalongo said the infant sustained severe genital and anal injuries, including internal damage to the uterus, leading to massive internal bleeding.
The suspect is currently in lawful police custody as investigations continue.
