Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha has urged the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to take responsibility for what he says are the root causes of the country’s current economic hardships.

Wrapping up debate on the mid-year budget review in Parliament, he argued that Malawians from Chitipa to Nsanje and Phalombe understand the origins of today’s fiscal pressures.

Mwanamvekha claimed these problems stem from what he termed “mismanagement and lack of fiscal discipline” under the MCP.

He supported his argument by referencing the International Monetary Fund’s assessment when the Extended Credit Facility expired in May this year.

According to the IMF, the programme struggled due to fiscal indiscipline, difficulties in rebuilding foreign exchange reserves, and unresolved external debt restructuring issues.

The minister said these findings align with concerns previously raised by the government.

He urged opposition lawmakers to “accept reality rather than play holier than thou” as debates on the economy continue.

Mwanamvekha concluded by calling for unity and honesty among leaders, stressing that Malawi’s recovery depends on putting citizens’ welfare ahead of political interests.
