Kanengo Police have arrested a 29-year-old man, Yembekezani Lazaro, for allegedly swindling two business operators in Area 25.
According to Kanengo Police Publicist Greshim Ngwira, Lazaro deceived Niar Ching’ombe by claiming he was selling 20-litre gallons of cooking oil at K124,000 each.
The incident happened on 9 December 2025 when Lazaro visited Ching’ombe’s shop and pretended to negotiate a sale, despite having no intention of supplying the oil.
Lazaro later approached saleslady Chisomo Manda at a nearby shop, posing as a buyer and convincing her to deliver two 20-litre gallons to his shop with a promise to pay later. While Manda stepped out, Lazaro collected K250,000 from Ching’ombe as payment for the same cooking oil.
His scheme was exposed shortly after, leading to his arrest. Police say Lazaro intended to deceive both business operators for quick financial gain.
Lazaro is in custody and faces fraud-related charges. Kanengo Police have urged any other potential victims to come forward and assured the public of their commitment to tackling such scams.
Lazaro hails from Chimunguli Village, Traditional Authority Chiseka, in Lilongwe.
