Former Minister of Local Government and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda has surrendered himself to police headquarters at Area 30 in Lilongwe after learning that he was being sought by law enforcement.
His surrender comes just hours after police earlier today arrested former Minister of Trade and MCP running mate in the September 16 presidential election, Vitumbiko Mumba.
Mumba was reportedly arrested this morning at his home in Area 47, Lilongwe.
So far, police have not issued an official statement detailing the reasons for Mumba’s arrest.
However, his detention is believed to be linked to remarks he made during a press briefing held around election time, where he alleged that the DPP was rigging votes.
During that briefing held together with MCP spokesperson Dr. Jessie Kabwila Mumba used the phrase “WE’VE GOT THIS,” which authorities claim had the potential to incite public disorder.
Both incidents have sparked intense public debate, with many awaiting official clarification from the Malawi Police Service.
