Blantyre City Mayor Isaac Jomo Osman has today been elected president of the Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA).

Osman secured 34 votes to defeat Nkhata Bay Council chairperson Hannock Kachingwe, who garnered two votes.

Meanwhile, Maloto Joseph Chimkombero from Ntchisi District Council was elected vice-president unopposed after the other candidate withdrew from the race.

The election, administered by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), was held at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe to fill the positions left vacant following the expiry of the previous executive’s term.

MALGA advocates for decentralisation and the development of local government structures in the country.
