Unknown assailants have killed a police officer in Mchinji District. The deceased has been identified as Bright Kampeza, 40, who was stationed at Namizana Police Unit near the Malawi–Mozambique border.

Central Region Police Spokesperson Foster Benjamin said Kampeza met his death on Tuesday night in Nsolo Village, under Traditional Authority Mabvwere in Mchinji District.

According to Benjamin, Kampeza was returning from Nkhompola Police Station, where he had dropped off a colleague who was on night duty, when he was ambushed by suspected robbers. The assailants allegedly struck him on the head with a bluegum tree before stealing his Sun LG bicycle, registration number MP 1228, and an Itel mobile phone.

Kampeza was found the following day in a tobacco field after losing a significant amount of blood.

The late officer hailed from Manyenje Village under Traditional Authority Mabvwere in Ntcheu District.
