A 56-year-old woman, Magret Kaunga, from Kawerama Village under Traditional Authority Kawinga in Machinga District, has been arrested for allegedly causing grievous harm to her six-year-old nephew.
According to Machinga Police Station public relations officer, Western Kansire, the incident occurred two days ago at Nkhuna Village in Liwonde.
Kaunga is alleged to have grabbed the child’s hands and placed them on a burning charcoal stove (mbaula) after finding him quarrelling with his sister over kamba puffs.
Kansire said the child sustained severe burn injuries to both hands and was rushed to Ntaja Health Centre, where he received medical treatment.
He added that Kaunga remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon to answer a charge of causing grievous harm once investigations and paperwork are completed.
