The High Court in Lilongwe has found two Rwandan nationals guilty of murdering Noel Emile Habimana, who was the former husband of one of the accused.
In his judgment, High Court Judge Bruno Kalemba convicted Gilimata Gentille and her accomplice, Rafick Munyamagaju, ruling that the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the pair were responsible for Habimana’s death on October 17, 2022.
The court established that after killing Habimana, the two attempted to conceal the crime by taking his body to Kamuzu Central Hospital, where they falsely claimed he had died in a road traffic accident.
Evidence further showed that they facilitated a fraudulent postmortem process and obtained a misleading report to support the false narrative.
Judge Kalemba said the actions of the accused demonstrated a calculated effort to deceive authorities and obstruct justice.
The court has since granted both the state and the defence 30 days to submit written arguments on sentencing, after which the judge will pronounce the sentence.
