Police in Mwanza District have arrested three people for allegedly damaging and stealing over 400 metres of ESCOM electricity cables worth about K1 million.

Mwanza Deputy Police Spokesperson Ritta Nyirongo said that, the suspects are Frazer Matewere, 25; Harry Makombola, 15; and Daniel Damiano, 20.

Nyirongo said the three were arrested on Monday, March 2, at around midnight at the Mwanza checkpoint while attempting to pass with the stolen cables.

When asked where they had obtained the cables, the suspects failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, prompting police to arrest them.

Nyirongo has since appealed to residents in the district to report anyone suspected of damaging or stealing government property to the nearest police station.

Matewere, who hails from Kalumbu Village under Njolomole High Chiefdom in Ntcheu District, and Makombola and Damiano, who come from Benjamin Village under Kanduku High Chiefdom in Mwanza District, are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges.
