A court in Ntcheu has sentenced 38-year-old Davie Kanyama to pay a fine of K400,000 or serve one year in prison for possessing two bags of charcoal without a permit.
According to prosecutor Beatrice Dzuka, Kanyama was found with the charcoal on the 7th of this month while transporting it on a bicycle for sale.
In his ruling, Second Grade Magistrate Pleasant Sichali also ordered that the bicycle used in the offence be returned to its owner. If the owner fails to claim it, the bicycle will be forfeited to the government.
The charcoal has since been handed over to the District Forestry Office.
