Police in Lilongwe have arrested 46-year-old Donnex Mwale, a resident of Thabwe Village in Nkukula, Dowa District, for allegedly possessing 35 bags of unauthorized plastic bags valued at K5.2 million.

Deputy Public Relations Officer for Lilongwe Area 3 Police, Khumbo Sanyiwa, confirmed the incident and said Mwale is expected to appear in court soon.

Malawi Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) Director of Environmental Education and Publicity, Aubrey Chirwa, said the agency will continue working with police to ensure compliance with the ban on plastic bags.

Malawi has enacted a law banning the manufacture, importation, and sale of single-use plastic bags, defined as those with a thickness of less than 60 microns, effective 2025.
