Police in Chiradzulu District have arrested a couple on suspicion of murdering a two-week-old baby in a case that has shocked the local community.

Chiradzulu Police spokesperson, Hubert Mwangoka, identified the suspects as Macdonald Mili, 60, and his wife, Triphonia Chancy, 36. According to Mwangoka, the two got married about three months ago, at a time when Chancy was already pregnant by another man.

Reports indicate that Chancy gave birth to a baby girl at home on April 6. However, on April 22, a dispute reportedly arose between the couple regarding the child. The disagreement allegedly escalated, leading to a decision to kill the infant.

Police say the couple then buried the body in a nearby bush.

Suspicion was raised after community members noticed the baby’s sudden disappearance and reported the matter to authorities. Following investigations and questioning, the two suspects allegedly confessed to the crime.

They are currently in police custody and are expected to appear before court soon to answer charges of murder.

Authorities have condemned the incident, describing it as a tragic loss of life, and have urged communities to seek help and report conflicts before they escalate into violence.
