The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has called for an independent investigation after Malawi Police fired teargas to disperse former President Lazarus Chakwera and MCP officials during Kamuzu Day commemorations in Lilongwe.

In a statement signed by Michael Kaiyatsa and Kelvin Chirwa, HRDC described the police action as excessive and unjustified.

The coalition said conflicting reports surrounding the incident require urgent clarification through an independent inquiry.

HRDC has urged the Malawi Human Rights Commission and the Independent Complaints Commission to investigate the matter and release their findings publicly.

Meanwhile, Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito defended the police action as lawful and necessary.

The incident has sparked debate over police conduct and the protection of democratic freedoms during public events.
