Nine Arrested Over Illegal Activities in Kaning’ina Forest Reserve

Authorities have arrested nine people in connection with illegal logging, charcoal burning and firewood production in Kaning’ina Forest Reserve.
The operation was conducted jointly by the Forestry Department, the Malawi Police Service, the Malawi Defence Force and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife.
According to Mzuzu Police deputy spokesperson Edson Chipeni, the suspects have been identified as John Mweso, 27, Davison Mpira, 27, Bobulex Msani, 42, Tiwonge Mphande, 46, Mavuto Mkandawire, 44, Gilbert Banda, 39, Stonard Nyirenda, 44, Glory Nkhoma, 30, and Esther Mzenga, 21.
Forestry officials reportedly found the suspects operating camps inside the forest reserve where they were cutting trees, processing timber and burning charcoal illegally.
During the operation, officers confiscated timber, two bags of charcoal, two axes, a hoe and four pangas.
The arrests were made on May 19, and the suspects are expected to appear before court soon to answer charges related to illegal exploitation of forest resources.
